Bringing Monocle’s editorial world to the web

I helped Monocle turn its distinctive editorial identity into a website the team could carry through to launch in April 2025. Bringing journalism, radio, film and travel guides together meant deciding how much of the print experience belonged online, and where screens needed a different approach.

The direction changed as we explored ideas with the client. I helped turn that evolving ambition into product decisions, then stayed close through delivery, weighing complex features against budget and helping restore archive articles with AI-assisted workflows.

Print identity,
responsive experience

I worked through a two-day onsite workshop with the team to define the product architecture and navigate those decisions. It formed part of the RFP process and won us the work. Monocle had exceptionally high visual standards and a clear point of view on what made its print experience work. Together, we worked through where that sensibility could translate to a responsive site, and where the demands of different screens and interactions called for a different approach.

Judgement through delivery

That judgement extended into delivery. I helped weigh complex features against budget and priorities, and later used AI-assisted workflows to restore migrated archive articles, treating each piece individually so the presentation did justice to the original content.

From exploration to a focused launch

The site launched in April 2025. The result was not a literal execution of the earliest concepts, but a considered evolution of Monocle’s digital home, shaped through exploration, client feedback and collaboration across design and engineering.
